Asian Business Leaders Award

Celebrating the social impact of commercial enterprise

The Asia House Asian Business Leaders Award celebrates the enormous social impact of commercial enterprise which, at its best, promotes values of leadership and service that can be felt far beyond the boardroom.

Tremendous opportunities for social change are created by business leaders through these shared values. By recognising individuals who embody this ideal, we seek to encourage widespread recognition and adoption of these values among the global business community.

Asia House presents this annual award to those individuals who exemplify the concept of the ‘Servant Leader’. This award highlights the links between economic success, professional excellence accompanied by moral leadership, and service to society.

Hiroaki Nakanishi, Chairman of the Board, Representative Executive Officer, Hitachi, Ltd. won the Asia House Asian Business Leaders Award for 2016. The award was presented to Mr Nakanishi at a gala event at Westminster’s Banqueting House on Tuesday, 1 November. The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, gave a speech at the dinner.

Mr Nakanishi was selected as the recipient of the 2016 award in recognition of his achievements over the course of his five-year tenure at the helm of Hitachi, a Japanese multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Tokyo.

Mr Nakanishi led one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Japanese corporate history. When Mr Nakanishi became president, Hitachi had suffered four years of losses amounting to nearly US $10 billion. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, the company’s profit totalled US $5.173 billion.

Mr Nakanishi made several bold decisions to restructure Hitachi and bring the company back into profit, which included a shift of focus from consumer-related products to global infrastructure projects. He also directed the company to look outside Japan in order to grow, with overseas operations now accounting for more than 51 per cent of revenue.
