DIT Director General: Determining options for new UK trade policy

John Alty, Director General, Trade Policy, Department for International Trade (DIT), briefed Asia House corporate members on the process of delivering an independent trade policy for the UK once it leaves the EU.

Discussion points covered at the briefing included the UK Government’s plans to improve trading relationships; the UK’s membership of the WTO; the UK’s participation in ongoing negotiations for EU FTAs; and the opportunities for the UK in Asia post-Brexit.

John Alty has been Director General of Trade Policy at DIT since July 2016. He joined from the Intellectual Property Office, an Agency of the Business Department, where he was CEO from 2010 to 2016.

Corporate members represented at the table included KPMG, HSBC, Mitsui & Co. Europe, Diageo, UOB, RELX Group, Eversheds Sutherland.
