EU and ASEAN cooperation

Melanie Ullrich, Business and Policy Programme Manager

“Engaging with Asia and in Asia is a strategic priority for the EU, whatever other powers may do. Our level of engagement does not depend on the engagement of others, and it is clearly there to stay.”  So said Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in an interview with ASEANFocus.

Mogherini is currently in the Philippines for a visit focused on the European Union’s relations with ASEAN. She co-chaired the EU-ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference on 6 August, which marks 40 years of partnership between the two blocs. Both sides issued a Joint Statement on the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations.

Mogherini will represent the EU at the ASEAN Regional Forum this week, which brings together 27 participants, including the ten ASEAN countries, the EU and countries such as Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States.
