In a remote village obscured by clouds high in the mountains of Tajikistan, Bibicha retreats to her grandmother Khanjarmomo’s house to embark on a ritual known as ‘Chilla-nashini’, a 40-day period of complete silence. Sharing the space is Bibicha’s aunt, Khamida, who has returned from the city and communicates frantically with a local man via text messages, and Khamida’s illegitimate daughter Sharifa, who has been raised by her grandmother. In this cloistered environment with no immediate male presence, the stories of these four women, representing three generations of the same family, meld into one, as Bibicha’s obscure motivations for her vow fall under Khanjarmomo’s suspicions.

This first feature of Tashkent-born, Paris-based video artist Saodat Ismailova (b. 1981) is a truly unforgettable work. The film evokes the universality of spiritual experience through a mesmerising combination of textures, landscapes and sound.
