A former advisor to President Barack Obama, Dr Desai is an Asia scholar with a focus on education, art, culture, policy, and women’s development.
Dr Desai served as President and CEO of Asia Society from 2004 until 2012. As President, she set the direction for the Society’s transnational initiatives through thinking in terms of connectivity among Asian countries and through an innovative exhibitions and cultural programme.
Currently, Dr Desai is Senior Advisor for Global Affairs, Senior Research Scholar in Global Studies, at the School of International and Public Affairs, Colombia University. She also serves as Senior Advisor for Global Policy and Programmes to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
Dr Desai is a frequent speaker at international forums on subjects focusing on cultural roots of Asia’s economic and political transformation and challenges. She is internationally recognised for her leadership in presenting contemporary Asian arts and ideas through fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Before joining Asia Society, Dr Desai was a curator and the Head of Public Programs and Academic Affairs at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
