In the once-thriving industrial town of Shenzhen in Southeast China, Lin Dalin, the owner of a toy factory in threat of imminent closure, makes a Faustian pact with a massive American corporation for a last-minute order of dolls for the Western market. Strong competition from cheaper Asian producers and fluctuating exchange rates compound the problem of already negligible profit margins, yet to pull out would mean shutting down the factory and leaving his workers unemployed. Lin speeds up production, increases working hours, delays staff wages and waives safety regulations in an attempt to keep his enterprise afloat, severely compromising the morale and health of his employees, until an idealistic journalist’s damning exposé of his sweatshop production methods forces him into considering ever more desperate methods.

A nuanced, fast-paced and gripping drama that earned its star Yao Anlian the Best Actor Award at the Montreal World Film Festival in a role that, in fact, proves impossible not to sympathise with.
