Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, said in his State of the Union speech on 13 September: “On 29 March 2019, the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. This will be a very sad and tragic moment. We will always regret it. But we have to respect the will of the British people,” . In his one hour long speech, Juncker mentioned Brexit only once.

Negotiations to leave the EU have started, but are faltering at a very early stage. It is currently unlikely that the next step, the negotiation for a future EU-UK trade deal, will start this autumn as was originally planned. “Brexit negotiations will be the harsh reality of diplomacy. Nobody should be surprised unless they were a bit deluded”, said Sir Jonathan Faull, who until his retirement in January 2017 was the European Commission’s most senior British official. He will brief Asia House corporate members about the ongoing negotiation process and possible outcomes next Monday 18 September.
