ASEAN celebrates 50th Anniversary

ASEAN celebrates 50th Anniversary

By Sam Deave

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) celebrates its 50 year anniversary since the founding of the now 10 member regional bloc on Tuesday 8 August.

How will ASEAN continue to rise on the global stage? Asia House and AirAsia invited 26 prominent voices from its network to share their insights on the future of the ASEAN integration process and how the region will come to play a pivotal role in the political and economic landscape. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of this regional bloc, Asia House is publishing some of the pieces submitted by our contributors online.

As Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint wrote in his foreword for the book, “With more than 625 million people, ASEAN is bringing both peace and prosperity to the most diverse corner of the world. The progressive elimination of tariff and non-tariff barriers is creating a business and investment climate that the original founders of ASEAN only envisioned five decades ago. ASEAN demographics show a populace that is young, middle class, eager to succeed, and more exposed to the world than ever before. The ratification of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 fostered an environment that will enable members of this demographic to harness their ingenuity on a larger scale.”
