Asian Business Leaders Award presented to Azim Premji

Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro Ltd, was presented with the Asia House Asian Business Leaders Award at London’s Banqueting House on Monday 14 October, 2013.

Business Secretary Dr Vince Cable gave the welcome address and Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire presented the award to Mr Premji as diplomats and senior figures from the international business community looked on. The evening was supported by HSBC.

The annual Asia House award recognises those individuals who embody the ‘Servant Leader’ – economic success and professional excellence accompanied by moral leadership and service to society.

Business Secretary Dr Vince Cable said: With 40 per cent of the world’s High Growth Markets located in Asia, it is more important than ever to recognise the role of Asian business people in contributing so much to the strength and breadth of the UK economy.

For both his business acumen and his notable contributions to Indian social causes, Mr Premji is a very well-deserved recipient of the Asian Business Leaders Award.”

About Azim Premji
Azim Premji is the Chairman of Wipro Ltd, a position he has held since the late 1960s. Under his guidance, Wipro has diversified from a hydrogenated cooking fat company into an IT, BPO and R&D Services organisation with a presence in 57 countries.

In 2001 Mr Premji established the Azim Premji Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation with a vision of significantly contributing to improving quality and equity in Indian schools.  Today the Foundation works with the school systems of seven states covering over 300,000 schools.

A non-executive Director on the Board of the Reserve Bank of India, Mr Premji is a member of the Prime Minister’s Councils for National Integration and for Trade & Industry in India and also a member of the Indo-UK and the Indo-France CEOs’ forum.

Azim Premji is a graduate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, USA. He is married with two children.
