Norbert Röttgen, former Chair of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee

Asia House will welcome former Chair of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Norbert Röttgen on 13 September for an in-person Corporate Members briefing on Germany’s foreign and energy policy, with a particular focus on relations with China.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has forced a re-think of Germany’s foreign policy. Sanctions imposed on Russia have brought Germany’s energy dependence on Russia into the spotlight, forcing Berlin to reassess its foreign policy direction and strategic dependencies. Redefining relations with China has emerged as a priority for the new Scholtz administration, however developing a more assertive foreign policy while maintaining constructive economic and trade relations with China represents a key challenge for the German government.

Röttgen, a leading foreign policy voice in Germany and a member of the Asia House Advisory Board, will brief Corporate Members on Germany’s foreign policy outlook and provide insights on the future of Germany-China relations. He will also discuss how Germany is engaging with regional partners throughout the Indo-Pacific, reflect upon its G7 priorities, and consider the government’s ambitions to reduce dependence on Russian energy.

This briefing is convened exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members and moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence. To register interest, please email Edward Danks, Programme Associate: edward.danks@asiahouse.co.uk
