Charles Hay shares insights from Malaysia amid ongoing political uncertainty

    Published On: 9 December 2020

Asia House Corporate Members received an update on Malaysia’s volatile political situation during a briefing with Charles Hay, British High Commissioner to Malaysia, today (9 December).

Speaking from Kuala Lumpur, Hay gave an overview of the current state of play in Malaysian politics, and shared predictive analysis on the likely developments moving in to 2021. The High Commissioner also outlined the COVID-19 situation in Malaysia, and the effect it is having on the economy.

Areas of opportunity for UK businesses in Malaysia, particularly in the tech sector, were also discussed in the briefing, chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence.

Asia House Corporate Members joined the discussion from around the world, with Hay taking questions on the role of the king in Malaysian politics; relations between Malaysia and China, particularly around infrastructure projects; and opportunities across the education and health sectors. KL’s take on the UK’s proposed accession to CPTPP, and the issue of wider economic integration within Southeast Asia, were also discussed in the off-the-record briefing, convened exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members.
