Global thought leaders discuss China’s digital transformation and its implications for businesses

    Published On: 21 November 2022

Global thought leaders from Microsoft, IBM and McKinsey shared insights on China’s digital transformation – and its implications for businesses around the world – during an Asia House conference, held in partnership with CKGSB.

‘China’s Digital Transformation: Shaping the Global Data Landscape’ saw Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer for Greater China, Roan Kang, discuss the regulatory environment in China, and how companies are navigating one of the world’s most advanced digital economies – with China being a global leader in ecommerce.

The differences between China’s digital sector and that of the US was unpacked in a compelling presentation by Sun Tianshu, Visiting Professor of Information Systems, Director of the Centre for Technology, Big Data and Digital Transformation, CKGSB.

Professor Sun contrasted China’s data-driven and ‘top down’ approach to innovation with the research-led, ‘bottom-up’ approach of Silicon Valley, and identified different areas of convergence and competition in the two economies’ digital sectors.

The hot topic of data regulation, meanwhile, was central to a panel discussion between Anthony Butler, Chief Technology Officer, IBM Middle East and Africa; Violet Chung, Partner, McKinsey and Company; and Li Yang, Associate Professor of Marketing, CKGSB.

The discussion, moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence, brought together the latest industry thinking on data and digitalisation, which will be crucial for economies around the world as their innovative sectors – from ecommerce to electric vehicles – develop and expand.

The conference was held in partnership with leading business school CKGSB, delivering cutting edge insights from industry and academia to members of Asia House’s international network.
