Lord Green to give major keynote speech at Hong Kong trade dialogue

    Published On: 15 October 2019

The economic and geopolitical shifts taking place across Asia will have a profound and lasting influence on the rest of the world, Lord Green, Chairman of Asia House, will say during a major speech in Hong Kong later this month.

The former Chairman of HSBC, who served as UK Trade Minister from 2011 to 2013, will speak at Asia House’s Future of Trade conference, to be held at the Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Limited’s Connect Hall, on 30 October.

Lord Green, whose new book The Human Odyssey was published last month, will speak on the rise of Eurasia and how economies across the region will reshape the global order – affecting the lives of billions of people around the world.

Asia House is bringing the Future of Trade dialogue to Hong Kong at a crucial time for the city, where the ongoing crisis has raised concerns about Hong Kong’s future as a global financial centre and its role in world trade.

As well as discussing Hong Kong’s future prospects as a trade and investment hub, the conference will explore the forces shaping the global trade landscape, from US-China tensions to the rise of disruptive technologies. Sustainable infrastructure in Asia will also be covered.

The rapidly-changing tech landscape in Asia, and the role of Hong Kong in driving the global digital revolution, will be a key talking point at the forum.

Other speakers include Ambassador Robert Holleyman, former US Deputy Trade Representative; Julian Vella, APAC Regional Head, Global Infrastructure Advisory, KPMG; and Ada Li, Vice President, Senior Credit Officer, Moody’s Investors Service.

Lord Green said: “Asia House will bring together global thought leaders to assess what lies ahead for trade in the midst of unprecedented shifts in the global order. It builds on Asia House’s previous events in Hong Kong, Dubai and Singapore, which provided a platform for debate on some of the most pressing issues of our time.

“We believe this is an important moment to be holding such a dialogue in Hong Kong, and we look forward to engaging with the business community to explore the issues shaping the future of trade.”

The Future of Trade conference is sponsored by HKEX and InvestHK, and builds on the success of previous Asia House dialogues across Asia.

The Director-General of Investment Promotion at InvestHK, Mr Stephen Phillips, said: “I am delighted to see Asia House bringing this conference back to Hong Kong.

“It is a very timely platform for global leaders and CEOs to exchange ideas on the ever-evolving global economic order, and better understand the enduring advantages and new business opportunities that Hong Kong has to offer in the context of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay area development and the Belt and Road Initiative.”
