Professor Wang Yao outlines China’s green finance approach

    Published On: 7 September 2021

China’s approach to green finance and the broader trends across the sector were the focus of an Asia House briefing with Professor Wang Yao, Director General of the International Institute of Green Finance, on Tuesday 7 September.

Speaking from Beijing, Professor Wang discussed the structure of China’s green finance system and outlined the policy measures it has implemented to boost sustainable investment. Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence then opened the discussion up to Corporate Members dialling in from around the world.

Professor Wang was asked about the prospect of an agreed green finance standard between China and the EU; the drivers of growth in China’s green finance sector; and the latest developments in carbon pricing and markets, including China’s recently-launched emissions trading scheme. The implications of China’s green agenda for the Belt and Road Initiative and the opportunities for the private sector and lawmakers to develop effective regulation were also discussed in the off-the-record briefing, convened as part of the Asia House COP26 Programme.
