Dr. Joachim von Amsberg, Vice President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), emphasised that the AIIB has been open to all countries, and, in particular, to all member countries of the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank. In an interview with The Voice of America, von Amsberg said that this open invitation will continue. Currently the bank has 77 members, with seven new members having joined in May.
The AIIB was launched in January 2016. Since then it has made 13 investments, including investments in India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Oman. Von Amsberg has said, “We see the AIIB as an expression of that belief in connectivity, integration, and trade. We want to be a facilitator because connectivity means physical investments and that is what AIIB comes in to play.”
Dr. Joachim von Amsberg will make a public speech at Asia House on the new multilateral order and the role of the AIIB on 1 June.
