His Excellency Hiroshi Oe, the Permanent Representative of Japan to the OECD, briefed Asia House corporate members this week on his experiences negotiating trade issues with the Obama and Trump administrations, and the outlook for global trade going forward.
Ambassador Oe provided frank insights on a range of important issues, including the challenges facing future trade agreements like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the soon-to-be-signed EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. The Ambassador also spoke about the likelihood of a global trade war.
The briefing was timely given the possibility Japan will retaliate against the US imposition of tariffs, and the announcements that the US and China may soon impose tit-for-tat tariffs on products from the technology and agriculture sectors.
The briefing was part of the Asia House New Global Trade Order series, providing unique and informed insights and analysis to members of the Asia House network.
