WTO Chief Economist to speak at Asia House Singapore conference

The World Trade Organization’s Chief Economist, Robert Koopman, will speak at Asia House’s major trade dialogue in Singapore this November, amid dramatic shifts in the global trade landscape.

Koopman, who is the Director of the Economic Research and Statistics Division at the WTO, will take part in the Asia Trade in the New Global Order conference in Singapore on 22 November.

The conference brings together leading figures from governments, business and regulation to explore the key themes that matter to global trade today, including trade policy, new technologies and the Belt and Road Initiative.

With the global trade order in unprecedented territory, shaken by US-China tensions and a perceived weakening of support for multilateralism, the role of the WTO has come under increasing focus. Koopman will therefore bring valuable insights to this important conversation.

As Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Research and Statistics Division at the WTO, Koopman provides the Secretariat and Member Countries with analysis and information that promotes a deeper understanding of trade and trade policy’s role in economic growth and development.

Prior to this post, he served as the Director of Operations and Chief Operating Officer for the United States International Trade Commission. He oversaw the Commission’s trade policy research and negotiation assistance to the US President, the US Trade Representative, and Congress.

This included work across anti-dumping and intellectual property investigations – some of the key issues at the heart of current US-China trade tensions.
