Hu Shuli: China in the new global architecture

Hu Shuli, founder of CAIJING Magazine and editor-in-chief of Caixin Media, will discuss the role of China in the new global architecture at a briefing with Asia House corporate members.

Donald Trump’s America First policy and withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership suggests the US will be retreating from global trade. Meanwhile China’s President Xi Jinping spoke at Davos in favour of globalisation.

Trump frequently targeted China during his presidential campaign, blaming the nation for job losses in manufacturing and accusing Beijing of currency manipulation. How will these developments shape the future of China-US relations and how will China position itself in this context?

As one of China’s most respected journalists, Hu provided the leadership that brought CAIJING to its eminent position as one of China’s most authoritative business publications. She left CAIJING in 2009 to create Caixin Media Company Limited.

In 2008, she was named by US magazine Foreign Policy as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world alongside names including Noam Chomsky, Umberto Eco, and Salman Rushdie. She received the 2007 Louis Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism from the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, and was called the most powerful commentator in China by the Financial Times. The Wall Street Journal cited her as one of the ‘Ten Women to Watch’ in Asia in 2006.

Hu Shuli recently published The Best Strategy to Fend off Trump Protectionism.

The briefing with Hu Shuli is part of the Asia House New Global Trade Order Series. The ongoing Asia House programme will assemble decision-makers and influencers to brief corporate members as this new architecture takes shape.

Attendance at this event is for Asia House corporate members.
