The New Global Trade Order: Julian Braithwaite
Julian Braithwaite, Ambassador and Permanent Representative, UK Mission to the UN and other International Organisations like the World Trade Organisation and the International Organisation for Migration, will brief Asia House corporate members as the UK looks to take a new role within the changing global trade order.
Now that UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty, the starting gun has been fired on the 2 year negotiating process of the new UK – EU relationship. The UK’s relationship with international organisations like the UN and the WTO will be even more important in the shifting global landscape, and Julian Braithwaite will be at the forefront of forging these relations. See his recent piece on ‘Ensuring a smooth transition in the WTO as we leave the EU’ here.
The briefing with the ambassador is in a series of events at Asia House which looks at the new global trade order. Our programme assembles decision-makers and influencers to brief corporate members on this new trade architecture as it takes shape.
Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the WTO, gave an interview with Asia House where he spoke about the possibility of the UK falling back on WTO trade schedules in the event that the UK and EU could not reach a mutually-acceptable trade deal. Ambassador Braithwaite will be well-placed to expand more on the potential upsides and downsides of such an event, and how the UK is preparing for the possibility in its negotiations.
Ambassador Braithwaite was born in Rome, and was educated in the United Kingdom and the United States, completing his education in 1992 at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1994, and has had a long and distinguished career. He spent his early career deeply involved in conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, and worked in Downing Street multiple times including running the Government’s communication campaign during the 2011 Libya crisis. He also served in Washington as a Counsellor for Global Issues, and most recently in Brussels in the UK Representation to the EU, as Ambassador to the EU Political and Security Committee.
