The New Global Trade Order: Danny Alexander, AIIB

The UK was one of the first major Western countries to join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as a founding member, and in doing so paved the way for other Western powers to follow suit. Sir Danny Alexander, Vice-President and Corporate Secretary of the AIIB, stated that it is in the economic interests of the UK to see Asian economies strengthen through infrastructure investment. He also mentioned that the resources of governments and international institutions may not be sufficient, and that there must be significant contribution from the private sector if the AIIB is to meet the existing funding gap.

Sir Danny will join Asia House corporate members to discuss the UK’s role in the Chinese-led bank, and whether its commitment to such international organisations will waver post-Brexit.

Earlier this year Asia House hosted Dr. Joachim von Amsberg, Vice-President, Policy and Strategy of the AIIB, where he shared his insights regarding the AIIB’s wider relations with other banks and multilateral institutions.

Sir Danny was appointed to his role in the AIIB in February this year. Before his appointment, he was the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and the MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. He joined the Liberal Democrats’ shadow Work and Pensions team in 2005 and in July 2007 he was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, holding the post until June 2008.
