An Economic Analysis of China’s 19th Party Congress

The Chinese Communist Party’s 19th congress will open on 18th October 2017. China’s top leaders will set the tone for economic policy for the country for the next five years. While President Xi is expected to be reappointed, there will no doubt be significant changes among other leadership positions.  Although specific economic policies are not determined, who ascends to power and what is stated officially at this meeting will give some indication of China’s next five-year plan.

Shuang Ding, Head of Greater China Economic Research at Standard Chartered, will speak to Asia House corporate members to give his analysis of the direction and changes seen at the congress and what this may mean for the world’s largest economy in the coming years.

Shuang joined the Bank as Head of Greater China Economic Research in April 2015. He has more than 20 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. Shuang was previously Senior China Economist at Citigroup, where he had led the China Economic research team since early 2011. He worked at the IMF from 1997-2010. Prior to the IMF, Shuang was an economist with the People’s Bank of China from 1993-97.
