Hong Kong: The Belt and Road legal and deal making hub

Ms. Teresa Cheng, Secretary for Justice for the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK SAR) will join Asia House corporate members on 14 June for an off-the-record briefing.

Recently appointed, the Secretary for Justice will discuss Hong Kong’s role in the Chinese-led Belt and Road Initiative.

In April this year, the National Development and Reform Commission of China and HK SAR outlined a shared vision for Hong Kong’s participation and assistance in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Hong Kong’s comprehensive financial markets and sound legal system make it a candidate to become the legal and deal making hub for the Belt and Road.

Theresa Cheng was a Senior Counsel in private practice before joining the Government. She was one of the founders and Chairman of the Asian Academy of International Law and in 2008 she became the first Asian woman elected through a global election as President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Ms Cheng is a member of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes Panel of Arbitrators, and was a member of the World Bank’s Sanctions Board.
