Indonesian Elections 2019
With an economy valued at US$1 trillion GDP and a growing population of 260 million, Indonesia stands as Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and demographic. Its upcoming presidential elections featuring incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and retired lieutenant general Prabowo Subianto holds significant economic and political impact for both Indonesia and the region.
With a month remaining until Indonesians cast their vote on April 17, it is a pivotal time for the economy. The incumbent government continues to battle to maintain the value of the rupiah, growth rates have stagnated and the long-term repercussions of the ongoing US-China trade war – which saw Indonesia’s stocks fall two per cent last week – are unknown.
Jacqueline Hicks, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow, Asia Research Institute, University of Nottingham and Shotaro Tani, Staff Writer, Nikkei Asian Review, will discuss the economic and political implications of the upcoming elections as well as Indonesia’s place amid current global trade tensions in this private briefing.
