Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area with Edward Yau

The development of the Greater Bay Area is accorded the status of key strategic planning in China’s national development blueprint, having great significance in the country’s implementation of innovation-driven development and commitment to reform and opening-up. The objectives are to further deepen cooperation amongst Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, fully leverage the composite advantages of the three places, and promote coordinated regional economic development with a view to developing an international first-class bay area ideal for living, working and travelling.

Edward Yau, GBS, JP, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development at The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), will brief Asia House Corporate Members on Hong Kong’s unique role in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative. He will also cover Hong Kong’s economic and trade outlook during the briefing, held on Tuesday 21 May.

Mr Yau’s portfolio covers a vast array of policy areas including trade and commerce; telecommunications and broadcasting; promotion of creative industries; intellectual property and consumer protection; boosting inward investment; and tourism development. Prior to assuming his current role, he was Director of the Chief Executive’s Office from 2012 to 2017, assisting the Chief Executive in formulating policies and setting policy goals and priorities. He was previously the Secretary for the Environment from 2007 to 2012.
