Andrew Heyn, outgoing British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau

Following a tumultuous year for Hong Kong, Asia House Corporate Members will briefed on the latest developments in the Special Administrative Area by Andrew Heyn, the outgoing British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau.  

In 2020, alongside battling the public health and economic impacts of COVID-19, Hong Kong had to contend with the fallout from the implementation of the controversial National Security Law on 30 June and ongoing pro-democracy protests. The unrest in Hong Kong remains a major bone of contention in UK-China relations, with Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab recently describing the arrest of pro-democracy politicians and activists as a “grievous attack on Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms”.

In the longer term, the city’s future status as a global financial hub remains uncertain. While Hong Kong continues to receive booming investment from Mainland China, and sees its role as the primary conduit between Chinese and global finance strengthen, some Hong Kong-based firms are looking to bring some of their operations elsewhere to diversify geopolitical risks.

In this briefing, Andrew Heyn, the outgoing British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, will outline the current situation in Hong Kong and provide insights into the state of UK-China relations. Andrew joined the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 1989 and served in Caracas, Lisbon, Dublin, and as Ambassador to Myanmar from 2009-2013.
