With the UK gearing up to host COP26 this year, Asia House Corporate Members were briefed by Ken O’Flaherty, COP26 Regional Ambassador to Asia-Pacific and South Asia, on the latest efforts to engage with Asian countries on climate change and sustainability issues.
O’Flaherty discussed current trends across the energy sector and the transition to renewables during the off-the-record briefing, and outlined the situation in key markets across Asia. He also highlighted the role business can play in the global drive to cut carbon emissions.
Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence, chairing the meeting, brought in Corporate Members from around the world to join the discussion. Questions put to O’Flaherty included those on oil consumption in Asia and the challenges to securing buy-in on sustainability measures in the region; the role that finance and tech sectors can play in the global ‘race to zero’; and standardising rules across carbon markets.
The impact of the Biden administration on global climate change efforts, and China’s engagement in COP26, was also discussed.
The briefing, held exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members, was part of a series of COP26 activities that Asia House is organising throughout 2021.
