Angela Ellard shares latest on WTO reform and challenges facing global trade

    Published On: 1 March 2022

The latest developments at the World Trade Organization amid the current challenges facing global trade were discussed by Angela Ellard, Deputy Director General of the WTO, during a briefing with Asia House Corporate Members today (1 March).

In a comprehensive briefing, Ellard outlined the WTO’s efforts to support the global recovery from COVID-19 and address vaccine inequality, as well as the progress it has made on environmental policies including fisheries. The ongoing efforts to reform the organisation were also discussed in the briefing, chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence.

The DDG took a range of questions from Asia House Corporate Members who joined the exclusive briefing from around the world. Ellard was asked about the impact of sanctions on Russia and how these will affect global trade; the level of private sector engagement with the WTO; and the organisation’s role in carbon pricing. Issues around IP and technology in trade, as well as vaccine development, were also discussed.

The briefing provided Asia House Corporate Members with unique insights on the WTO ahead of the 12th Ministerial Conference, which convenes in Geneva in June. Find out more about the benefits of Corporate Membership at Asia House.
