The COVID-19 crisis exposed a lack of global preparedness for health emergencies, and has since prompted countries to identify and understand vulnerabilities within their economies and health systems.
Asia House, in partnership with Pfizer, is assembling leading industry and government figures to share lessons learned during the pandemic and explore further collaborations to ensure that Asia – one of the world’s key growth engines – is ready for unforeseen health challenges.
This event, held digitally on 16 June, will feature the latest insights from health sector leaders, including Indonesian Health Minister Budi G Sadikin, as businesses and governments seek to better prepare for future health challenges.

HE Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Thailand (Video address)
HE Anutin Charnvirakul is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, and brings over 25 years of experience in business development and organisational management to his brief. His priorities in public health are to “reduce health expenditures, increase revenue, make people healthy, and make the nation wealthy”. Under his leadership, Thailand is the first country in Asia to legalise medical cannabis. He formerly served as the Deputy Minister of Public Health during July–October 2004 and March 2005–September 2006, and as the Deputy Minister of Commerce during October 2004–March 2005. He is a leader of the Bhumjaithai Party since November 2012. Mr Charnvirakul graduated from Hofstra University, United States with Bachelor Degree in Industrial Engineering. He was the President of Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Public Co., Ltd from March 1995 to June 2004. He also served as the Director to the Federation of Thai Industries and Thai Contractors Association Under HM the King’s Patronage.
Budi G Sadikin, Minister of Health, Indonesia
Budi G Sadikin was appointed Minister of Health by the President of the Republic of Indonesia on 23 December 2020, having previously led the National Economic Recovery and Transformation Task Force amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. He is assigned to lead the COVID-19 vaccination programme for the nation and improve health services in Indonesia. Between September 2017 and November 2019, he was the Group Chief Executive Officer of Mining Industry Holding Company, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero), which is comprised of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Timah Tbk, and PT Freeport Indonesia as Holding Members. Previously, Mr Sadikin held roles in IT and banking, having begun his career in 1988 as the Information Technology Officer at IBM’s Asia-Pacific Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He worked at IBM until 1994, culminating as Manager of Systems Integration & Professional Services. Subsequently, he joined PT Bank Bali Tbk, holding various managerial roles, including General Manager of Human Resources.
Pierre Gaudreault, President, Asia Emerging Markets Region, Pfizer
Pierre Gaudreault is President of Asia Emerging Markets Region for Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals Group. He is a well-respected corporate executive and thought leader in the pharmaceutical industry, and a highly experienced professional with more than 25 years of industry experiences in Canada, Europe, China, Japan and the Asia Pacific region. Pierre spent the majority of his career at Pfizer where he acquired extensive expertise in corporate management and go-to-market models, as well as developed in-depth knowledge about multiple health care systems and archetypes across the globe. In line with Pfizer’s purpose: breakthroughs that change patients’ lives, Pierre is leading the innovative agenda of Pfizer in Asia through its six franchises including Vaccines, Oncology, Rare Disease, Inflammation & Immunology, Internal Medicines and Hospital, whereby each one is uniquely positioned to benefit patients and change their lives.
Patrick Osewe, Chief of the Health Sector Group, ADB
Dr Patrick L Osewe is the Chief of the Health Sector Group at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He provides leadership on policy, technical, and operational matters. In close collaboration with the Sector Committee, he leads the application of evidence based and innovative approaches to address priority and emerging health issues in Asia and the Pacific. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Patrick has provided leadership and guidance in the implementation of ADB’s US$20 billion commitment to respond to COVID-19 and US$9 billion for Developing Member Countries (DMCs) to obtain and deploy COVID-19 vaccines. His work related to COVID-19 includes providing technical assistance to operational teams and DMCs, convening global partners to reach consensus on key implementation issues, prioritise investments and mobilising leading private sector firms to support a range of preparedness and response activities. Prior to his time at ADB, Patrick was a Global Lead for the World Bank’s Healthy Societies, and led major global and regional multi-sectoral efforts to address health challenges.
Andrew Wong, Chief Health Officer, Prudential Corporation Asia
Andrew joined Prudential Corporation Asia as Chief Health Officer in January 2018. He has over 30 years of international experience in executive management positions across Asia, Australia, Middle East and Europe in the insurance and healthcare industry. Prior to joining PCA, Andrew was the CEO, Asia Pacific of Munich Health from 2014 to 2017, based in Singapore. Prior to that, Andrew held a number of senior executive positions within Bupa in Asia and the UK. The latest position he had with Bupa was as the CEO of Bupa Thailand from 2008 to 2014. Andrew is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Master of Commerce degree from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
Professor Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director, Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, Sunway University
Dr Mahmood is a medical professional with more than two decades experience managing crises in health, disasters and conflict settings. She is currently Professor and Executive Director of the newly established Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University in Malaysia, and a member of the Malaysian Climate Action Council and Consultative Council for Foreign Policy. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Centre, and the Pro-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. Dr Mahmood was the Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia on Public Health and member of the Government of Malaysia’s Economic Action Council from April 2020 to September 2021, and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards including the Merdeka Award in 2015 and the ASEAN Prize in 2019, for her contribution to peace, community development and humanitarian work.
