Shadow Minister for Asia and the Pacific, Catherine West, addressed Asia House Corporate Members on Monday 6 February, to explain how a potential Labour government would engage China, and elaborated on the party’s broader policy agenda for the Indo-Pacific.
With a general election due no later than January 2025, businesses are starting to pay serious consideration to what a Labour Government’s policy agenda may look like.
West, who has been MP for Hornsey and Wood Green since May 2015, has been Shadow Minister for Asia and the Pacific since December 2021. A fluent Mandarin speaker, West provided insights into Labour’s foreign policy ambitions in the Indo-Pacific. Reiterating a recent speech by Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, David Lammy MP, West explained Labour had a “3C” strategy towards China – to challenge, compete and co-operate where they can. West also took questions from Asia House Corporate Members about China’s collaboration in the health and technology sectors, it’s relationship with Hong Kong, and why it has the technology of the future.
Held at the think tank’s London headquarters, the off-record-briefing was chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence and provided Corporate Members with updates on Labour’s policies for the Indo-Pacific region.
