Michael Pettis, Professor of Finance at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management and Senior Fellow at the Carnegie China Center engaged in a detailed discussion with Asia House Corporate Members on Tuesday 25 April on China’s economic outlook.
Speaking from Beijing, Professor Pettis – a leading expert on China’s economy and financial markets – provided insights to members on China’s economic outlook and evolving role within the global economy. Members were briefed on China’s GDP data, debt challenges, and efforts to overcome global banking failures and lower exports. The discussion focused on the outlook and future of China’s dual circulation strategy, and policies to boost domestic consumption in the Chinese economy. Professor Pettis also took questions on the internationalisation of the RMB and the prospect of the Chinese currency eroding dollar hegemony in global commerce, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on China’s service sector.
Chaired by Asia House’s Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, and hosted digitally, the briefing gave Asia House Corporate Members a unique insight into the current trends and future of the Chinese economy.
