Martin Kent, HM Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific, briefed Asia House Corporate Members on the UK government’s latest trade initiatives in the Asia Pacific during an off-the-record briefing on Tuesday 26 November.
Commissioner Kent outlined the government’s key priorities for the region, focusing on defence, decarbonisation, and digitalisation. He highlighted the UK’s trade relationships with countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, as well as its deepening engagement with ASEAN. Additionally, he addressed the UK’s role within the CPTPP and discussed the prospects for future candidate accessions.
Asia House Corporate Members posed questions on a wide range of topics, including the ASEAN-UK Integration Programme, strategies to enhance market access across Asian economies, and the potential for future free trade agreements in the region. Members also explored opportunities for private-sector investment in Asia’s digitalisation efforts and raised concerns about increasing protectionism in parts of South-East Asia.
Chaired by Asia House’s Head of Programmes, David Taylor, the briefing provided a valuable opportunity for members to engage directly with a senior UK official at the forefront of advancing the UK’s trade and investment ties with Asia.
