Asia House discussion: HE Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK
On Thursday 26 September, Asia House will welcome back the Chinese Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Liu Xiaoming, to share his views on the near and long term China-UK relations and China’s ongoing programme of economic reforms.
Since the “Golden Era” of UK-China relations was heralded by President Xi Jinping and UK Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015, the world has undergone significant changes. The election of President Trump, the deepening of the trade conflict between the USA and China, and the uncertainties caused by Brexit have all increased the complexity of the UK-China bilateral relationship. The recent unrest in Hong Kong has also been a cause of concern for all parties.
Despite these challenges, trade and investment relations between the UK and China remain resilient. China’s position as a major investor and trade partner of the UK is unchanged, and the 10th UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue held in June this year included a number of key agreements and was heralded as very successful by both governments.
Ambassador Liu will share his perspectives on the maintenance of positive UK-China relations with an audience of business and policy leaders at Asia House. The Ambassador will also highlight new policy developments designed to further open the Chinese economy to international investment. With market access being an important issue for British companies looking to establish themselves in the Chinese market, China’s ongoing economic reform programme remains of key interest to both UK businesses and the government. The Ambassador will also discuss the situation in Hong Kong and policy responses to economic growth in China.
The session will conclude with a Q&A session with the audience.
