China Economic Dialogue
After three years of extensive Covid restrictions, China’s economy was expected to rebound rapidly in 2023. The International Monetary Fund projected in its Regional Economic Outlook that “Asia and the Pacific will be the most dynamic of the world’s major regions in 2023, primarily driven by the positive outlook for both China and India.” This optimism was supported by H1 economic data released in July by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, which indicated robust recovery over the past six months following the relaxation of most COVID-19 restrictions. However, clouds are beginning to form over its recovery after three-consecutive months of slower than expected growth pointing to potential economic headwinds. In August the Chinese State Council published the “State Council’s Opinion on Further Optimizing the Foreign Investment Environment and Increasing the Attraction of Foreign Investment” in a bid to maintain confidence among foreign investors.
In this exclusive dialogue on China’s international economic engagement, delegates from Asia House and The China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) will explore ways in which the private sector can deepen economic cooperation between China and other major economies. Mr. Bi Jingquan, Executive Vice Chairman of the CCIEE, will deliver opening remarks drawn on his knowledge of China’s international economic engagement.
This dialogue will be held off-the-record and moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE.
