The New Global Trade Order: Japan’s role in the global economy in an era of change

Hajime Takata, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Economist at the Mizuho Research Institute in Japan, will discuss Japan’s role in the global economy in an era of change and rising economic nationalism.

This discussion around Japan’s economic policy and the country’s role in the global economy comes at a particularly testing time for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Government, with his LDP party being dealt their worst ever results in the Tokyo election earlier this month, a poll that has previously served as a good indicator of national political trends.  The result has led to some speculation over the long term viability of ‘Abenomics’, amid falling approval ratings for Prime Minister Abe. This trend has in recent weeks been reversed, with the Japanese public reacting well to Abe’s handling of the current North Korean crisis, leading to a marked improvement in his approval ratings. This upturn in popularity, combined with the current weak position of opposition parties has led to considerable speculation that PM Abe will dissolve parliament on 28th September, triggering an election.

Since 2011, Mr Takata has served as the Chief Economist of the Mizuho Research Institute, the economic research branch of the Mizuho Financial Group, and in 2017 became the Senior Managing Executive Officer, having served as Managing Executive Officer since 2011. He is also as a member of the Government Tax Commission and a appears as a commentator on programs such as TV Tokyo’s World Business Satellite.
