New Malaysia: gauging the change

HE Maria Castillo Fernandez, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Malaysia, will join Asia House corporate members for a private, off-the-record briefing on 22 June.

The Malaysian election on 9 May saw a shock victory for Mahathir Mohamad’s Pakatan Harapan coalition, who defeated the incumbent PM Najib Razak’s Barisan Nasional, which has dominated Malaysian politics for decades. Razak conceded by saying that this was the ‘choice of the people’. Since the election, a number of key policy changes have taken place, including the resignation of the Central Bank Governor, the reduction of the Goods and Services Tax from six to two per cent, and the scrapping of plans for a high-speed railway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Ambassador Fernandez will share her perspectives on the present situation in Malaysia and what the Pakatan Harapan government is expected to bring for both the political and business environment in Malaysia. She will also brief members on what this means for the EU’s relationship with Malaysia and trade with the ASEAN region more broadly.
