The 2012 Man Asian Prize winner, Shin, and debut novelist Lee join us from Korea for this timely discussion about what happens to people when their country suffers a political division. They are joined by British Pakistani author, Shahraz, whose work focuses on women and Partition.  Join us for this discussion of their work, their countries and how political separations have influenced social values.

Kyung-sook Shin is the author of six novels in addition to Please Look After Mother, which has sold almost 1.5 million copies in South Korea alone. She is one of the country’s most widely read and acclaimed novelists, having won the Manhae Grand Prize for Literature, the Dong-in Literature Prize, and the Isang Literary Prize, as well as France’s Prix de l’Inaperçu.

Krys Lee was born in South Korea and studied in the US and England. She was awarded The 2012 Story Prize Spotlight Award and was shortlisted for the 2012 BBC International Story Prize for her debut book Drifting House. Her work has appeared in Granta, The Guardian, Financial Times, Conde Nast Traveller, UK, and other publications. She lives in Seoul, South Korea, where she is a professor of creative writing at Yonsei University’s Underwood International College.

Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Qaisra Shahraz was born in Pakistan. She has lived in Manchester since childhood and gained two Masters Degrees in English and European literature and scriptwriting. Qaisra was named one of 100 influential Pakistani women in Pakistan Power 100 List (2012). Previously she was nominated for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards and for the Muslim News Awards for Excellence in the UK.

They will be speaking with Yasmeen Khan, broadcaster, journalist and reviewer, who was a regular presenter on the BBC Asian network and cultural adviser to Eastenders.  As a journalist, Yasmeen has written on issues relating to the British Asian community.

This event is in partnership with the British Council as part of the Korea Market Focus Cultural Programme at The London Book Fair 2014.
