Wayne David MP, UK Shadow Minister (Middle East and North Africa)

Wayne David MP, UK Shadow Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, will brief Asia House Corporate Members on a UK-Middle East policy under a Labour government in an off-the-record and in-person briefing on Tuesday, 11 June at Asia House in London.

With heightened tensions in the Middle East, the Israel-Gaza conflict continues to destabilise the region with several flashpoints that could lead to a broadening of the conflict. Houthi attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea also continue to threaten supply chains globally, which prompted a UK and US response.

Against this uncertain backdrop, and with the Labour Party currently leading in the polls ahead of a general election, Wayne David will update members on Labour’s perspective and approach to promoting regional stability in the Middle East. Several countries in the region, particularly in the Gulf, are undergoing profound shifts, with economic diversification and the implementation of socioeconomic reform advancing at rapid speed. Wayne David MP will also discuss Labour’s policy towards the Gulf and strategy towards ongoing UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.

Wayne David has been an MP since 2001 and has served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales as well as Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces and Defence Procurement during his tenure. Wayne David MP also serves on the Executive Committee of the British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The briefing will be held exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members and moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE. To register interest, please email Alana Li, Middle East Research Analyst: alana.li@asiahouse.co.uk.
