Representatives from more than 25 Asian and European countries will be among the audience at today’s Asia House event on the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Leading corporate figures will also attend the conference, at which Dr. Joachim von Amsberg, Vice President, Policy and Strategy, will give a speech. He will outline the infrastructure investment finance paradox, how the need for a new multinational development bank has developed and how the AIIB will position itself in the evolving multilateral lending landscape.

The China-led AIIB is a new multilateral financial institution founded to bring countries together in order to address the daunting infrastructure needs across Asia. The AIIB’s President, Jin Liqun, recently revealed the aim was to rival such lenders as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank. Unlike the World Bank and the ADB however, the AIIB has no overarching objective to reduce poverty and instead remains broadly focused on projects that generate a commercial return or upgrade economic efficiency. Power stations, roads, railways, urban development and telecoms are all areas of interest for the bank.
