Ambassador Matt Murray, US Senior Official for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), provided Asia House Corporate Members with the latest updates on US economic strategy across APEC at an off-the-record digital briefing on Thursday 12 September.
Speaking from Washington D.C., Ambassador Murray highlighted the importance of the US-China relationship in light of recent geopolitical developments. He emphasised APEC’s unique position as a consensus-based, non-binding platform that facilitates engagement between major economies, including the US and China. APEC’s recent initiatives, including advancing private and public sector collaboration on sustainability and inclusion, and the challenges of maintaining open trade relations amid geopolitical tensions, were also discussed at the briefing.
Asia House Corporate Members asked Ambassador Murray’s views on various topics, including the impact of the US presidential election on US-China relations, APEC’s approach to sustainability and the complexities of setting trade standards in a rapidly evolving economic landscape. Ambassador Murray also discussed the importance of maintaining open lines of communication with China, the role of APEC in addressing regional challenges and the ongoing efforts to drive collaboration on critical issues such as supply chains, decarbonisation and digital finance.
Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, the session provided valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of US economic policy in the region and underscored the critical role of platforms like APEC in navigating the complexities of international trade and investment.
