Brian Davidson shares insights on Hong Kong’s political and economic trajectory

    Published On: 30 October 2022

Recent policy developments in Hong Kong and their implications for UK-China relations were the focus of an Asia House briefing with Brian Davidson, UK Consul General to Hong Kong and Macao, on 26 October.

Speaking just days after China’s 20th Party Congress and the recent policy address by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee, Davidson shared his thoughts on Hong Kong’s political and economic trajectory, including COVID policy and the opportunities emerging in the Greater Bay Area initiative. The state of UK-China relations was also discussed in the off-the-record briefing, convened exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members.

The Consul General took a range of questions during the briefing, with topics including people flows to and from Hong Kong; the latest developments around the Greater Bay Area; and Hong Kong’s wider economic role in Asia. The UK’s approach to China under new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and the impact of ongoing political tensions on businesses in Hong Kong, were also discussed.

Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence, the briefing provided Corporate Members with fresh insights into one of Asia’s key financial hubs.
