    Published On: 13 March 2024

Catherine West MP, UK Shadow Foreign Minister (Asia and the Pacific) provided Asia House Corporate Members with the latest updates on Labour’s foreign, trade and security policy in the region at an off-the-record briefing on Wednesday, 13 March.

West provided updates on Labour’s view towards trade and security with China, potential free trade agreements in the Asia-Pacific and relations with the European Union. West also discussed the conflict in Ukraine and cooperation with countries including Japan.

The topic of China dominated questions by Asia House Corporate Members to West, including questions related to Chinese electric vehicles, Hong Kong and future dialogue between the UK and the Asian superpower under a Labour administration. Members also asked West for her assessment of Labour’s engagement with India and Mongolia as well as her views on November’s US Presidential Election.

Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE and held at the think tank’s London headquarters, the briefing offered Asia House Corporate Members valuable insights into Labour’s foreign policy objectives ahead of the UK’s forthcoming General Election.
