Given the trajectory of US-China trade talks, the outstanding threat of US withdrawal from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding a post-Brexit world, the global trade order is facing drastic reconfiguration.

As part of the Asia House New Global Trade Order series, Robert Koopman, Chief Economist at the WTO, briefed Asia House Corporate Members on the emerging global trade order amid these recent developments. In this private off-the-record briefing, he addressed the underlying causes of the global economic slowdown, including the impact of the US-China trade war, the potential for WTO reform, and the ramifications of a post-Brexit tariff scramble on the global market.

Koopman has previously served as Director of Operations and Chief Operating Officer for the US International Trade Commission, where he oversaw the Commission’s trade policy research and negotiation assistance to the President, the US Trade Representative and Congress.

Following the briefing, Koopman was in conversation with Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence.
