Dr Ma Jun, Founder and President of the Institute of Finance and Sustainability in Beijing, provided Asia House Corporate Members with insights on China’s efforts to promote green finance and sustainable development at an off-the-record digital briefing on Tuesday 22 October.
Speaking from Beijing, Dr Ma offered an in-depth overview of China’s latest initiatives for a comprehensive green transformation of its economic and social development, following the updated guidelines issued by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council in August 2024. He highlighted the growing role of carbon trading in China, updates to the emissions trading system, and the development of transition finance markets across Asia.
Asia House Corporate Members engaged Dr Ma in an informative Q&A session, seeking his views on a range of topics including EU-China phase two Common Ground Taxonomy and discussions on its inclusion of the UK, transition finance development by private banks in Asia, and China’s international collaboration with the UK, Timor Leste, and other G20 countries on green finance and sustainable supply chain.
Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, the briefing provided a valuable opportunity for members to gain insights from one of the most influential voices on China’s green finance and sustainability, and to explore the country’s strategies ahead of COP29.
