Gareth Davies CB, Permanent Secretary of the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) briefed Asia House Corporate Members on the UK’s international trade policy direction and the new department’s agenda throughout the Indo-Pacific on Thursday 1 June.
The discussion was centred on the UK’s international trade strategy in a post-Brexit economy, along with the DBT’s heightened focus on creating long term prosperity, financial growth and employment. Davies highlighted the key goals that his department aims to achieve. He also spoke of the government’s intention of creating a pro-growth domestic regulation environment.
The briefing was followed by a discussion between Davies and Asia House’s corporate members where the UK’s bilateral trade relations with China, US and India were addressed – along with the UK’s increased focus on technology, decarbonisation and a reduction of its carbon footprint. Davies also highlighted the need for domestic and international collaboration to generate growth across sectors.
Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE and held at the think tank’s London headquarters, the briefing gave Asia House Corporate Members a unique insight into the UK’s economic strategy in the aftermath of Brexit and what lies ahead.
