HE Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia and one of the most influential political figures in Asia over the last six decades shared his insights on Malaysia, ASEAN and contemporary geopolitical ties, in an exclusive private briefing for Asia House Corporate Members on Thursday 15 June.
As Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister, Dr Mahathir discussed his views on the country’s recent political developments, along with addressing the future of ASEAN and the bloc’s prospects for integration in the midst of escalating tensions between China and the US. He also shared his concerns over climate change and emphasised the global need for a roadmap towards net zero.
Dr Mahathir asserted that the tides of international diplomacy have now changed and the world has acknowledged the position of the Global South in terms of its social, political and economic growth. He emphasised that ‘climate change has to be handled not on a country basis, but worldwide, because it effects the whole world’. There was also a detailed discussion on the effect of Covid-19 on people and the global economy, along with expressing the need for a ‘central research authority to ensure that we can deal with future pandemics’. Dr Mahathir spoke extensively about the importance of recognising the needs and interests of smaller nations across the world, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE and held at the think tank’s London headquarters, the briefing gave Asia House Corporate Members a unique insight into the future of Malaysia and South East Asia through the lens of Dr Mahathir and decades of his political experiences.
