Kurt Vandenberghe, Director-General of DG CLIMA at the European Commission provided Asia House Corporate Members with the latest updates on the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and Europe’s overall climate strategy at an off-the-record digital briefing on Tuesday, 12 March.
Director-General Vandenberghe outlined the EU’s climate agenda at the core of the European Green Deal and the role of CBAM as part of the climate policy toolbox. Green finance investments by the private sector and progress on the EU’s partnerships with countries in Asia, such as Japan and ASEAN, were also discussed at the briefing.
Asia House Corporate Members asked the Director-General’s views on a wide range of topics, including the monitoring, reporting, and verifying (MRV) robustness of China’s emissions trading system (ETS), the EU’s climate partnerships with least developed countries (LDCs), and the impact of CBAM on UK-EU trade.
Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE and held online, the briefing offered Asia House Corporate Members valuable insights into Europe’s latest thinking on climate policy and its ambitions to lead the global transition towards a green future.
