Lord Grimstone discusses UK investment efforts as economies pursue COVID-19 recovery

    Published On: 3 June 2020

As countries around the world seek to rebuild their economies in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, there is likely to be a global race to attract investment. To gain an insight into the UK’s prospects for the challenges ahead, Asia House welcomed Lord Gerry Grimstone, Minister for Investment at the Department for International Trade and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, to brief Corporate Members.

In an insightful briefing, Lord Grimstone discussed the importance of attracting investment and the areas where the UK is focusing its efforts, before Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence opened the session up for discussion.

The candid conversation, which convened Asia House Corporate Members from around the world, saw questions on a range of issues, including the UK’s trade policy priorities; the need to address challenges around the UK’s international reputation; and the impact of COVID-19 safety measures on particular sectors. Geopolitical factors and the prospect of an extended Brexit transition period were also discussed in the off-the-record briefing, as was the role of Higher Education in attracting FDI.

Asia House Chairman Lord Green, who served as UK Trade Minister from 2011 to 2013, also joined the video discussion, which was held exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members.
