Mahathir shares perspectives on Malaysia’s political trajectory

    Published On: 24 March 2021

Asia House Corporate Members were briefed on Malaysia’s volatile political situation today by former Prime Minister HE Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Malaysia’s fourth and seventh Prime Minister shared his perspectives on recent developments in the country – including his return to power in 2018 and the events that followed – and outlined how he sees the current situation playing out. The statesman also discussed the economic challenges facing Malaysia, which have been compounded by the COVID-19 crisis.

The discussion, chaired by Michael Lawrence, Chief Executive of Asia House, saw Mahathir take a range of questions from Corporate Members who dialled in from around the world.

Mahathir was asked about his own political ambitions, the role of race in the country’s political dynamics, and the likely trajectory for Malaysia’s democracy in the months ahead. The country’s investment environment and modernisation agenda were also discussed, as were the digital, infrastructure and resources sectors.

The off-the-record briefing was convened exclusively for Asia House Corporate Members.
