Nazir Razak offers insight into Malaysia’s political trajectory

    Published On: 31 March 2020

Malaysia is currently navigating an array of challenges, with coronavirus cases on the rise and the economy in troubled waters. Politically, the country is in the midst of uncertainty following the shock resignation of Mahathir Mohamad in February and the subsequent appointment of Muhyiddin Yassinas as Prime Minister.

To update Asia House Corporate Members on the latest developments in Malaysia, Nazir Razak, former Chairman of CIMB Group and member of the Asia House Advisory Board, took part in a digital briefing on March 31.

Speaking via video link, Nazir outlined the political situation in Malaysia, and how he anticipates events to unfold. He also discussed the country’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, as well as an overview of how ASEAN is dealing with the pandemic. The economic fall out of the outbreak and the steps Malaysia might take to manage the financial impact were also covered.

Asia House Corporate Members joined the digital briefing from around the world, with questions being asked on the future prospects for the 1MBD investigation, Malaysia’s role in US-China tensions, and several questions on domestic politics in the country. Malaysia’s approach to energy transition was also raised, with the country being particularly exposed to falling oil prices.

The briefing was part of a series of digital events being convened by Asia House as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic. The series features government officials, experts and decision makers from across Asia, the UK and the US with the aim of keeping Asia House’s global network fully informed throughout the crisis.
