Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry, His Excellency Chan Chun Sing, will deliver a keynote address at Asia House’s major trade dialogue in Singapore this November.
Minister Chan, who is responsible for driving Singapore’s economic and industrial development, was appointed in May 2018 after serving in several ministerial roles in the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry for Communications, Information and the Arts. Before entering politics, he served with the Singapore Armed Forces, including as Chief of Army, before being elected as a Member of Parliament in 2011.
Commentators have cited him as among the front-runners to serve as Singapore’s next Prime Minister.
Minister Chan will make a keynote speech at the conference, held in Singapore on 22 November, before taking part in a discussion with Asia House Chief Executive, Michael Lawrence.
Asia Trade in the New Global Order is bringing together leading figures in global trade, investment, policy and technology to discuss and find solutions to the key challenges facing the trading landscape today. Those challenges include the US-China trade war and the increasing pressures on multilateralism – issues which Minister Chan explored in a recent media interview.
“We need to work with like-minded partners to uphold the global trading system, to continue to have the free-trade agreements either bilaterally or multi-laterally, to make sure that the global trading system remains open, free, and rules-based,” he said.
The Asia House conference, which is sponsored by Arup, Prudential and ABP, will explore these trade tensions, alongside the impact of new technologies in global trade. Singapore, as a major trade hub which is making significant steps towards becoming a regional leader in cybertechnologies and cybersecurity, is therefore a fitting venue for this important Asia House dialogue. The Straits Times is the official media partner for the dialogue.
In addition to Minister Chan, conference speakers include Kai-Fu Lee, Chairman and CEO, Sinovation Ventures, Tom Lembong, Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and former Trade Minister of Indonesia, and the World Trade Organization’s Chief Economist, Robert Koopman.
